Mercedes rolls out red carpet for $2.5m Maybach
Mercedes-Benz’s uber-luxury brand Maybach has a new, even more exclusive, flagship – the Landaulet.

One of the world’s most exclusive cars just got even more exclusive – and more expensive.
The Maybach Landaulet represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz’s uber luxury brand, bringing new levels of lavishness and a multi-million dollar price tag.
The Maybach sells for $1.2 million in the United States.
By the time you account for the exchange rate, GST, import duty and the luxury car tax the local price of a Maybach Landaulet is likely to be something in the region of $2.5 million.
That’s two-and-a-half times the $1 million being asked for the garden variety Maybach, which remains one of the world’s most exclusive luxury cars, especially as it failed to find a single Australian buyer in 2007. Maybach sales continue to struggle against the car’s only natural rival, the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Maybach has never achieved the 1000 annual sales it forecast and last year managed around 400 cars in 2007, 156 of which went to the US.
But Daimler chairman and CEO Dr Dieter Zetsche is adamant there are no plans to shelve the Maybach brand.
“The Maybach proved we can be at the top of the industry successfully,” says Zetsche.
The Landaulet starts life as the biggest, 6.2-metre long version of the regular Maybach but gets a folding roof for the rear half.
The front half is covered by a regular roof and trimmed in black.
The rear gets the open roof – it takes 20 seconds to fold away – and a clinically white colour scheme.
No luxury has been overlooked, from the plush white carpet to the DVD screens, champagne flute holders, fridge and an electrically operated partition to separate front seat passengers from the more luxurious rear.
White leather is splashed liberally around the cabin, from the doors and window surrounds to the coat hooks.
It’s interspersed with a black rock finish sourced from India
The rear seats – seen as the natural choice for the owner of a Maybach – recline like business class airline seats and can provide a mild massage for relaxation.
There are also two separate air-conditioning systems for the front and rear,
The Maybach Landaulet is powered by a Mercedes twin-turbocharged V12 delivering 450kW of power.
It needs all that power, though, because the Landaulet weighs a hefty 3.4 tonnes and requires almost 15 metres of road to perform a U-turn.
The Landaulet is officially a design study for now, but it’s understood that some customers have already ordered what is one of the most expensive cars in the world.
